Autumn Term

During this term we will focus our learning upon the British Value of Democracy and the Rule of Law. This topic involves looking at the structure of Parliament, including the House of Commons and the House of Lords.  In addition we look at the role of the Monarch in shaping our laws.

We then continue our learning by looking at a contrasting locality: The Paris Basin. Throughout this topic we focus upon the geographical features of the area, incuding patterns of weather.  We study The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick in our English sessions, and read Les Miserables, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The 3 Musketeers.  This further develops our understanding of France.

During the second half term, we start with our residential visit to The Pioneer Centre in Cleobury Mortimer. We focus on teamwork, building self-confidence, pushing ourselves beyond our limits and the importance of communication.

Back at school our attention turns to the impact that the Blitz had upon our local area, with specific reference to Coventry. We look at what life was like at that time and focus upon the plight of evacuees.  The modern classic novel of Goodnight Mister Tom provides the backdrop to this study.

Spring Term

With the horrors of war behind us, we start this term’s topic looking at how life has changed from 1945 to the present day. We focus upon the creation of the NHS, the development of technology and the changing influence of popular culture in everyday life.  The culmination of our study is an in-depth analysis of children’s TV from its beginning to the present day.

The second half term’s topic is Wild Earth. This unit of work involves looking at the devastating effects of natural disasters around our world.  We pay particular attention to the volcanic eruption in Pompeii and other life changing events such as Tsunamis and Earthquakes.

It is in this term that we also start our SATS preparation so that the children feel confident when test week begins.

Summer Term

This term sees us discover the budding entrepreneur in all of us! Our children form businesses who compete to raise the most money in order to fund a Year group treat.  We also prepare the children for transition to secondary school.

Throughout each term we emphasise the place of English, Maths and R.E. as cornerstones of our curriculum.

Finally, in this term, we celebrate all of our children’s successes as we say goodbye to St James by planning, organising and acting in our leavers’ assembly.
